Tissue Culture and Biotechnology

The Plant Tissue Culture and Plant Biotechnology laboratory is working since 1990 in two main lines, including woody plants and crop species.

The in vitro tissue culture of woody plants includes several fruit species, as cherimoya and olive tree, and the line of in vitro culture of crop plants includes species as tomato, watermelon and asparagus. The in vitro developments carried out with these species consisted in micropropagation and regeneration of cherimoya and clonal micropropagation of olive varieties difficult-to-propagate. Currently, work is focussed in regeneration and genetic transformation for control of ripening in cherimoya.

In crop plants, work has been done towards introducing tolerance to biotic stresses in tomato, development of triploid genotypes of watermelon, and currently are working on a breeding program of spanish autochtonous varieties of asparagus, including the rescue and preservation of selected genotypes, and the clonal micropropagation of these elite genotypes and their progenies after hybridization.
